The Danger Of Being Connected All The Time

The current generation of people is caught up with this accepted norm of our society: the need for a smartphone or mobile device wherever they may venture. Being connected all the time is an obsession and addiction. ENOUGH! I was born in Gen-X where we saw the birth and progression of these devices so I do get it. A smartphone is essentially a computer that fits in your pocket! I remember when…. Okay, I won’t go there. Technology has evolved, but it is also a bad thing.

Anti-social behaviour

Unfortunately, smartphone technology has also made our society lazy and complacent lacking in civilized manners and social graces. Heaven forbid we make eye contact with a stranger or talk to a friend in person. Just stare ahead aimlessly and try not to make someone feel uncomfortable on the bus or train. Heaven forbid! We are so wrapped up in our busy lives that we rely on technology to “connect” with people. Too busy “liking” someone’s post on FACEBOOK. We lose our focus and narrowly miss a car while crossing a busy street. Don’t get me started about people playing those interactive VR game apps like Pokemon! Another fad that gets old quickly.

Time to smell the roses

Let’s set down our devices and converse with other people. Almost like a “social disease” and addiction in our society where everyone needs to be “glued” to their screen. More moderation and self-discipline are needed and I know that is hard. The sun is shining and the flowers are in bloom if we could just tear our eyes away from our portable devices. OOPS.. I got to run. I just got a “ding” sound notification from my phone. Can anyone else relate to this addiction?
