The holiday season is charging towards us like a freight train out of control with Santa at the helm. Well, for those that believe in the Western Christian modern symbol- plump, jolly, gift-bringing Christmas icon derived from pagan roots. There is more to Christmas than running around buying the perfect gift or stringing up outdoor lights and decorations. Here are some ways to spread the Christmas cheer and make your holiday brighter.
Food Banks and charities
Do your part to help underfunded charitable organizations. Many of them are 100% volunteer, non-denominational charities that get most of their funding at this time of year. My wife and I stuffed a couple of shoeboxes last month for Samaritan’s Purse. You can do the same whether it is the Christmas Bureau, Santa’s Anonymous, your local food bank or your favourite charity. Sometimes I feel bombarded or ambushed by them so I am quite selective. Think of them when you are visiting your grocery store or dollar store. It doesn’t have to drain your wallet.
Gift of time
Something I would appreciate if one needs added stress to an already crazy calendar at this time of year. This is especially true for parents with kids who have little time for themselves or even shop for their family and loved ones. Volunteer your nanny or babysitting service for the afternoon. Not everyone has time off leading up to Christmas – so make arrangements to clear their busy schedule. Everyone deserves a break once in a while.
Can be a lonely, sad time of year
If you know someone who’s going through a difficult time, financially or emotionally, send them encouraging words and a little comfort food. Christmas can be a reminder of a loved one(s) that has passed away or it can be a financial burden. My favourite treat is to get some sugar cookies or shortbread. Maybe there is a co-worker who is feeling down? Buy him or her some pizza for lunch. Head to your favourite coffee shop. Little gestures can go a long way. It can be a lonely depressing time of year, so anything you can do to lift their spirits is a good thing.
Fellowship and the Word of God
Ironically people wait til Christmas time to walk with God or renew their faith. Christmas-only churchgoers. Not only do we celebrate the birth of Jesus, but it can be a great way to get closer to God and congregate with other worshipers and like-minded individuals. The festive Christmas carols are fun to hear and sing, especially with children’s choirs. Besides sermons praising the Lord, there are sometimes re-enactments of the birth of Jesus. Some people are just waiting to be invited and now’s the time to do it.
No matter how big or small, a random act of kindness can make someone’s day or even change his/her life. So take a few minutes and give: it can be a charitable gift or simple random acts of kindness. It makes you feel good and helps others in time of need. It will make your holiday season even brighter.
